Don't Take a Trip! | Residence 600 Salina Kansas

One in three seniors will fall outdoors at least once this year. While we tend to think of falls as happening in the home, outdoor falls are more common than indoor falls. More than half of all adult falls happen outside.

Since we don't want to become hermits, what can we do to keep ourselves and others safe when we leave our homes? There are many ways to take a little journey outdoors without making a trip into a trip!

Improve the outdoor space.
  • In residential landscaping, textured surface paint can make sidewalks less slippery.
  • Breaking up large grassy areas with patios or walkways provide more areas of even ground.
  • Installing handrails at intervals keeps those who walk steady.
  • Make sure the yard and walks have good lighting.

Improve ourselves.
  • Getting regular screenings of vision and hearing improves our ability to walk carefully.
  • Carry a cell phone. Don't leave home, even for a few yards, without a method to contact someone if a fall occurs.
  • Wear good shoes that have traction. A flat heel and rubber soul is safest.

Improve the experience.
  • Walk with a friend. Not only can we enjoy our time outdoors together, but a friend can get help, if needed.
  • Pay attention to what's around. We'll enjoy the flowers, the colors and the landscapes, as well as noting the height of curbs and uneven pavement.
  • Walk on the grass if the paved area seems uncertain. It will be safer and allow us to enjoy a little bit more nature.

And if we do take a fall:
  • Access the damage before moving. If you have any doubts about your condition, get help.
  • Find something to assist, like a park bench, a railing or even a large rock.
  • Consider seeking out some physical or occupational therapy which will include how to best rise from a fall.
