We had a little fun with this! Here is a comparison of the top five favorite entertaining/cocktail party type appetizers in the 1950-60s compared to today:

1950-60s:
  1. Shrimp cocktail: A classic appetizer made by serving boiled or steamed shrimp with a tangy cocktail sauce made of ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Deviled eggs: Hard-boiled eggs are halved and filled with a mixture of the yolks, mayonnaise, mustard, and spices like paprika or cayenne pepper.
  3. Cheese and crackers: Sliced cheese served with a variety of crackers was a popular appetizer at cocktail parties.
  4. Chex Mix: A crunchy snack mix made with Chex cereal, pretzels, nuts, and spices like garlic or onion powder.
  5. Pigs in a blanket: Mini hot dogs or sausages wrapped in puff pastry or crescent roll dough and baked until golden brown.
Today:
  1. Charcuterie board: A platter filled with cured meats, artisanal cheeses, crackers, bread, fruit, nuts, and spreads like honey or jam.
  2. Guacamole and chips: A dip made with mashed avocados, tomatoes, onions, and lime juice, served with tortilla chips.
  3. Spinach and artichoke dip: A creamy dip made with spinach, artichokes, cream cheese, and sour cream, served warm with bread or chips.
  4. Bruschetta: Toasted bread slices topped with chopped tomatoes, garlic, basil, and olive oil.
  5. Chicken wings: Fried or baked chicken wings coated in a variety of sauces, such as buffalo, barbecue, or honey mustard.
As you can see, there has been a shift towards more globally inspired dishes and a wider variety of flavors and textures in modern appetizers. While classic dishes like shrimp cocktail and deviled eggs are still enjoyed today, they are often served alongside more contemporary options like charcuterie boards and chicken wings.
